• The pentatonic scale is one of the easiest to use for improvising. All 5 notes can be resting tones.
• Whole note: lasts for 4 beats.
• Half note: lasts for 2 beats.
• Quarter note: lasts for 1 beat.
• Eighth note: lasts for 1/2 beat (two eighth notes in one beat).
• Feel the difference between a straight rhythm and a swing rhythm.
Improvisation ideas:
• Use just two notes of the scale… or just three notes… or four notes.
• Try using all five notes of the pentatonic scale.
• To improvise with a minor backing track, find the relative major (up three half steps), and use the notes of that scale.
